About Joel

Joel Brown is a baritone based out of Knoxville, Tennessee. Thus far in 2024 he will appear as the Commissario in Knoxville Opera's production of La Traviata and as the bass soloist in the Stainer Crucifixion with St. Stephen's Episcopal of Oak Ridge.

 

While residing in Knoxville, Joel has also appeared as the Butler in Kamala Sankaram and Rob Handel’s The Infinite Energy of Ada Lovelace with Marble City Opera and as the bass soloist in the Garcia Requiem with UT Southern.

 

Joel is an active singer in the Knoxville community, having performed with Knoxville Opera since 2022, as a soloist during the Rossini Festival held in downtown Knoxville, and as the baritone soloist for the Fauré Requiem. He is a graduate of the master's program at the University of Tennessee, where he innovated both classic and contemporary comic roles as Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, the Husband in Russell Smith’s The Unicorn in the Garden, and Willis Parkham in Dan Shore's An Embarrassing Position.

A native of Lincoln, Nebraska, Joel received his bachelor's degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University, appearing as Falke in Die Fledermaus, as well as the Father in Hänsel und Gretel, Bartley in Vaughan Williams's Riders to the Sea, Florindo in Arthur Benjamin's Prima Donna, and Dr. Gregg in Douglass Moore's Gallantry.
